The Strong Girl Everyone Saw
Healing From PTSD After Sudden Loss

What happens when strength becomes a mask?
As a teenager, Susan Snow suddenly lost the person she describes as her safe place. In the years that followed, she carried grief and trauma responses that the people around her did not know how to recognize, while learning to perform the strong and brave version of herself everyone expected.
Much later, a trauma-informed therapist helped Susan understand that her reactions had a name and that healing was possible. Her story centers on the relief of being understood, the gradual work of recovery and the hope that comes when asking for help is recognized as strength.
Before · The change · What came next
Before
Susan’s father made her feel protected, important and understood. His presence was a source of stability, and her bond with her younger brother gave her another meaningful connection inside a complicated family life.
The change
Sudden loss removed Susan’s sense of safety. Without effective trauma support, she learned to keep functioning while concealing fear, panic and emotional pain behind a capable public face.
What came next
Finding the right therapist became a turning point. Susan learned practices that helped her understand and regulate trauma responses, repaired important relationships and wrote about her experience. Today, her work is focused on law enforcement, first responders and the families carrying what other people may never see. Through The Resilience Roadmap, she encourages them to make mental health a priority and helps move the conversation from stigma toward strength.
“I want people to feel that feeling I had when I had hope for the first time in my life.”
