The Choice She Makes Every Day

Inherited Purpose, Family Sacrifice and a Life of Advocacy

Zolal Habibi, Season Four guest on Change Happened, Then What?

When a cause has already cost your family so much, why choose to carry it forward?

Zolal Habibi is an Iranian human rights activist and a prominent voice for justice, democracy, and women’s rights in Iran. She serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), where she advocates globally for a secular, democratic republic in Iran. With over two decades of dedicated activism, she has become a fierce advocate on behalf of the voiceless inside Iran, regularly appearing in international forums, human rights conferences, and live broadcasts across major media platforms.

Zolal’s activism began in her teens, profoundly shaped by the loss of her father—a respected Iranian writer and political dissident—who was killed by the regime during the 1988 massacre. This personal tragedy ignited a lifelong commitment to ensuring that no other family suffers such loss, and that the voices of Iran’s political prisoners, dissidents, and freedom-seekers are heard on the world stage.

Before · The change · What came next

Before

Human rights work was part of Zolal’s family before she was old enough to understand it. She grew up surrounded by people who believed freedom and dignity were worth defending, even when that commitment carried real personal risk.

The change

At eighteen, Zolal had to decide whether her family’s cause would also become her own life’s work. She chose advocacy while understanding that it could cost her the ordinary life she might otherwise have lived.

What came next

For more than two decades, Zolal has continued organizing and amplifying the voices of people who cannot speak freely. She describes commitment not as one dramatic decision, but as a choice renewed through uncertainty, setbacks and the absence of guarantees.

“Freedom and human dignity are never guaranteed—they must be protected and defended.”
