I Finally Became Myself
Chronic Illness, Art and Reclaiming the Driver’s Seat

Who are you when the role that made you feel valuable disappears?
Precious Burger learned young that acceptance could feel conditional. Growing up in West Virginia, she became a caretaker, a perfectionist and a high achiever who worked hard to create safety and belonging for other people.
Those strengths helped Precious build a thirty-year teaching career she loved. When years of unexplained illness and an eventual lupus diagnosis forced her to retire, she believed she had lost the identity that made her valuable. Art opened a different path back to herself.
Before · The change · What came next
Before
Precious grew up sensitive, curious and deeply connected to imagination. Childhood poverty, caregiving responsibilities and hurtful messages taught her to shrink and please, while music, nature and creativity remained places where she could feel safe.
The change
Chronic illness took away the classroom and career around which Precious had organized her adult identity. Retirement brought grief, uncertainty and the question of whether she still mattered when she could no longer earn belonging through usefulness.
What came next
While struggling to perfect a painting according to everyone else’s advice, Precious finally painted over it. In the new image, she recognized the critical voices she had allowed to steer her life—and decided they could ride in the back seat while she drove. Art became a practice of presence, freedom and self-trust.
“It didn’t matter if I made a mistake. I just had to be in the moment.”
