Episode 9-Natalies Journey: The woman who rewired Her Brain

From Tragedy to Transformation: Natalie’s Journey Through TBI, Healing, and Radical Love

The Accident That Changed Everything
At 49, Natalie was thriving—a hypnotherapist with a deep understanding of the brain and body connection. Then, during a sailing lesson on Vermont’s Lake Champlain, a sudden storm capsized her boat and left her with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The prognosis was grim. Doctors told her she’d never recover, and at just 47, she was diagnosed with dementia. But Natalie wasn’t having it. Something inside her knew that the story wasn’t over.

A Walking Experiment in Neuroplasticity
Natalie calls herself “a walking experiment in neuroplasticity”—the brain’s ability to rewire itself. But early on, she unknowingly worked against her own recovery by following outdated advice. Isolating in a dark room, avoiding light and motion, her brain adapted to that environment in harmful ways. Her story became one of learning—painfully and slowly—how to re-stimulate her brain and rebuild pathways one challenge at a time.

What the Doctors Missed
For years, Natalie bounced from doctor to doctor. It wasn’t until she met one who truly saw her that progress started. Her eyes were moving independently in opposite directions. Her body couldn’t tolerate light, motion, or even a walk through the grocery store. But with a mix of persistence, green-tinted glasses, herbs, and even Zoloft, Natalie began to rebuild her life. One tiny, hard-earned step at a time.

Radical Acceptance and Self-Love
Natalie eventually came to what she calls radical acceptance—not giving up, but accepting her life as it was while still believing in the possibility of change. She also discovered radical self-love in the most unexpected ways. “How do I love myself when I put dinner in the oven with the plastic wrap still on?” she joked. And yet, that’s what it took: letting go of perfection and choosing self-compassion over shame.

The Shift That Changed Everything
At her lowest, Natalie considered giving up. But when she asked herself what she’d do after death, the answer came: be love and light. And then a quiet voice responded, you can do that here. That moment changed everything. She made a decision to live differently, to embody love, and suddenly, her world became magical. She moved to Hawaii, found her life partner, and began to truly live again.

A New Chapter in France
Today, Natalie is continuing her healing journey while writing a book, leading spiritual tours in the South of France, and connecting deeply with the story of Mary Magdalene—a woman who, like her, transformed pain into purpose. The South of France, long believed to carry Mary Magdalene’s spiritual imprint, feels like home to Natalie. A place where healing, heritage, and heart all meet.

Her Morning Practice
Each day, Natalie wakes up and creates her own smile. She greets her spirit, her body, and God. She asks what she needs, and she listens. It’s a practice rooted in presence, love, and self-awareness—a far cry from the dark room she once lived in.

Natalie’s Advice
Natalie leaves us with this:

“Never give up. Find gratitude even in the challenges. Our souls are here to evolve—and we don’t evolve without being challenged.”

And I couldn’t agree more. Her story is a reminder that healing isn’t always linear, but it is possible. And that no matter what you’re facing, there’s always a way forward—even if you have to build it yourself.
