The Body I Blamed
Trauma, Chronic Illness and Learning to Listen

What if the body you blamed was asking you to listen?
Magic Barclay grew up believing it was her responsibility to repair a family in conflict. She survived childhood trauma, harmful relationships and domestic violence, carrying patterns of responsibility, silence and self-blame into adulthood.
Years of complex health problems left Magic feeling at war with her body. A simple plea from her young son became a wake-up call, connecting her desire to be present for her children with the need to ask different questions about her health, history and future.

Before
From childhood, Magic learned to survive instability by trying to fix what was happening around her. As she grew older, alcohol misuse, eating disorders and harmful relationships became part of a longer pattern of pain she had learned to carry.
The change
Motherhood made continuing in the same pattern feel impossible. When her son cried that he wanted to hug her like other children hugged their mothers, Magic began moving, studying nutrition and searching for a fuller understanding of her health.
What came next
Magic rebuilt life with her sons and studied functional health. Her work now reflects a shift from treating the body as an enemy toward considering health alongside trauma, environment, relationships and community. Family, nature, animals and her farm became anchors in the life she created afterward.
“Nothing’s ever a mistake. It’s always a lesson.”
