Season Four · Episode Twenty-Six · Stephie Prestige
I Can’t Fix This
Helplessness, Presence and the Courage to Stay

What does a lifelong fixer do when something cannot be fixed?
Stephie Prestige grew up knowing she was smart and loved, yet feeling helpless inside a family life shaped by instability, separation and grief. After her younger sister Kelly died from a brain aneurysm, Stephie could see the pain around her but could not make it better.
That feeling followed her into adulthood, where achievement, careful preparation and becoming a lawyer offered a sense of control. Then her grandmother called Stephie’s new law office during a family crisis and asked, “What are we going to do?” Stephie did not know the answer.
Before · The change · What came next
Before
Surrounded by strong women, Stephie learned early to notice what others needed. She became precise, analytical and achievement-oriented—the child who tried to do everything right when the circumstances around her remained beyond her control.
The change
Her grandmother’s question brought the old helplessness back into Stephie’s accomplished adult life. Instead of hiding what she did not know, she allowed the moment to redirect her legal career toward helping families navigate estate planning and disputed life-insurance claims.
What came next
Stephie learned that usefulness does not require making every problem disappear. She can listen, explain, advocate, find answers where possible and stay present when loss cannot be undone. The helplessness did not vanish; it became part of how she recognizes what another person may need.
“I may not be able to fix it… but I will do everything I can to help you not feel helpless.”
