Bouncing Forward
Finding Joy After Hardship

When joy becomes a way of moving forward
Alexi Bracey learned early how to make, sell and keep moving. Raised as the only child of immigrant parents, she remembers music and tango filling the kitchen with her father. Food later became both her profession and a language of care.
A cancer diagnosis, divorce, housing instability and a car accident that ended her work as a chef changed the shape of Alexi’s life. Her story is not about denying hardship. It is about building a daily practice of humor, kindness and self-worth while moving through it.

Before
Born prematurely and raised by immigrant parents, Alexi developed resourcefulness from a young age. The kitchen became a place of music, connection and purpose, and cooking grew into the work through which she cared for other people.
The change
Illness arrived alongside divorce and the responsibilities of caring for a baby. Housing became unstable, and later a car accident and broken femur brought her career as a chef to an end. The roles and stability she had relied on could no longer carry her forward.
What came next
Alexi began rebuilding around self-worth and forgiveness. Through jokes, kindness notes, homemade treats, daily messages, speaking and mentoring, she discovered that joy can coexist with pain. Small acts of presence became a way to protect dignity, create connection and help other people feel seen.
“We need the skills to overcome, to not bounce back. I say bounce forward.”
